TIE Article 50 Renewal – First-Hand Experience & Legal Clarification
I’m pleased to share that my own 10-year TIE residency card under Article 50 has now been successfully renewed, and the process was smooth, efficient, and most importantly — straightforward when approached with the right information.
At Expay, we regularly hear from people confused or misinformed by social media “experts.” Much of the information out there is based on hearsay or outdated interpretations. We do things differently: we work from verified legal sources and personal experience. That’s how we ensure our clients get the most accurate advice available.
This time, I went through the TIE Article 50 renewal process myself, and I’m sharing my first-hand experience to clear up any confusion.
Key Takeaways from My Renewal:
There is no need to apply online beforehand for Article 50 TIE renewals.
We are protected under the Withdrawal Agreement (Article 18(4)), and the process is detailed in the BOE of 21 July 2020, which confirms that renewal is handled in person at the police station.

Appointment & Documents:
The most difficult part is getting the appointment, not the paperwork. I scheduled mine shortly after my card expired and attended with the following documents:
EX-23 form
Tasa 790 012 payment receipt
Passport
Passport photo
Up-to-date padrón
I also brought proof of healthcare, working rights, tax return, and bank statement — none of which were requested.
The clerk simply took the main documents, asked me to sign, and completed my fingerprints.
She was courteous throughout and even spoke in English. We are in the Murcia Region and it was a pleasant experience.

I was told my new 10-year card will be ready in 30 days.
✨ Final Thoughts:
This process is not as complicated as some make it seem. If you know your rights, follow the correct legal steps, and bring the required documents, it’s incredibly straightforward.
At Expay, we don’t just offer advice we’ve done it ourselves. That’s what makes our service different. If you’re worried or confused about renewing your Article 50 card, we’re here to guide you with clarity and confidence.
