Your Spain paperwork checklist for October 2026

There is no single paperwork calendar that applies to everyone in Spain.

An autónomo, a resident with a driving licence and someone who owns a holiday home may have completely different things to check.

lets see what may be due for you.

Tax returns: what is coming up?

If you are autónomo or run a business, check whether your third-quarter 2026 returns are ready.

Depending on your activity, these may include Modelo 130 for income tax payments, Modelo 303 for VAT and Models 111 or 115 if you have made payments subject to withholding.

The filing deadline for these third-quarter returns is 20 October 2026.

If you want to pay by direct debit, the cut-off for many of them is 15 October.

Check that your invoices, expenses and bank details are ready before leaving it to the last day.

Own a Spanish property but live elsewhere?

IBI and Modelo 210 are separate taxes.

Paying the IBI bill does not replace a non-resident tax return.

If your Spanish property was available for your own use during 2025, check whether you need to file a Modelo 210 for that period.

The deadline for 2025 imputed property income is 31 December 2026.

If you rent out the property, keep a record of the rental dates and income.

Modelo 210 rules have changed, so an old quarterly reminder may be wrong. July to September 2026 rental income declared separately can still fall due by 20 October 2026. If you group your 2026 rental income into an annual return, the filing period is 1 to 20 April 2027.

Not sure which applies?

Check the way your previous return was prepared before copying its dates into this year’s calendar.

Have you checked your IBI bill?

IBI is charged locally.

There is no October payment date that applies across Spain.

Look at the calendar from the town hall or collection agency where your property is located.

Check whether your property is listed as urban, rural or both, whether the payment is by direct debit and whether the payment was actually taken.

This is particularly useful if you have bought a property, changed banks or moved since the last bill.

Driving licence, ITV and miDGT

Open the official miDGT app and check your Spanish driving licence expiry date, points and vehicle details, including the ITV date.

A Spanish licence can normally be renewed from three months before it expires.

You cannot drive on an expired licence while waiting to renew it.

The digital driving licence shown in miDGT has the same legal validity as the physical licence for driving within Spain.

It does not replace the physical licence when driving abroad.

If you still hold a foreign licence, check the rules for that licence rather than assuming it will appear in miDGT.

Have you changed address?

Changing your address with one office does not mean every other record has been updated. Check these separately:

  • Your padrón at the town hall where you now live

  • Your fiscal address with the Spanish Tax Agency. For a private individual this is generally updated through Modelo 030. Someone registered for business activity uses Modelo 036

  • Your DGT contact address and, if you own a vehicle, its fiscal address

  • Your healthcare and residence records where relevant

Keeping these details current helps official letters reach you and avoids using an old address on an application.

How long does a padrón last?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

Your registration on the padrón and a certificate of empadronamiento are different things.

The certificate is proof of what the town hall recorded on the day it was issued.

An office dealing with your application may ask for a recently issued certificate, sometimes one dated within the last three months.

That does not mean everybody’s padrón registration expires after three months.

There is an important exception to remember: non-EU residents without long-term residence may have to renew their padrón registration every two years.

If you are unsure whether yours needs renewing, ask your town hall to check your record.

Depending on your municipality, you may be able to request an individual or household certificate online.

A digital certificate is useful for this and for many other official procedures.

One final calendar check

Check your renewal dates

Check when your residence authorisation and TIE expire, along with your passport and health cover.

The renewal window depends on the permission you hold.

For a Non-Lucrative Visa residence renewal, you can apply during the two months before your authorisation expires.

An application may also be made within three months afterwards, but a late application could lead to a sanction.

Once your renewal is approved, you must request the new TIE within one month of notification.

Mark these dates now so you have time to prepare.

You do not need Expay to do every item on this list.
