What the Law Actually Says About Non-Lucrative Visa Renewals in Spain
If your first year on a Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is coming to an end, it’s crucial to understand how renewal works. You also need to know what immigration authorities are legally assessing.

Renewal Process Overview
Renewals are completed from within Spain. You do not need to return to your home country. Plus, there's no need for a police report.
You may apply:
60 days before your TIE expires
Up to 90 days after expiry (although applying before expiry is strongly advised)
The first renewal grants a further two years of residence.
The Legal Basis for Renewal
Renewals are regulated under Real Decreto 1155/2024, specifically Article 64. This refers back to Article 62 regarding economic means.
The law requires that you continue to meet the conditions under which your initial authorization was granted. This includes having sufficient economic resources and valid health insurance.
Financial Requirement – Monthly Threshold Explained
The financial requirement is calculated using the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples).
For the main applicant: 400% of IPREM per year.
For each dependant: 100% of IPREM per year.
Key Point: The threshold is assessed as a monthly amount. However, you must demonstrate that you can cover the entire renewal period.
Using the current IPREM reference level of €600 per month:
Main applicant: €2,400 per month equivalent (400%) translates to €28,800 per year or €57,600 to cover the two-year renewal.
Each dependant: €600 per month equivalent translates to €7,200 per year or €14,400 for two years.
Savings, Income, or Both?
The regulation does not state that funds must sit untouched in a current account. It requires sufficient economic means.
You can demonstrate this through:
Savings
Pensions
Rental income
Dividends
Investment income
Other passive income
Or a structured combination
What is not permitted is working in Spain under the Non-Lucrative authorization.
Immigration Assessment Criteria
In practice, immigration assesses:
Stability and regularity of income
Origin of funds
Accessibility of savings
Consistency of bank statements
That the resources genuinely belong to you
For example:
A pension exceeding €2,400 per month meets the threshold for a sole applicant.
€60,000 in accessible savings may meet the two-year requirement.
A combination of monthly income plus savings may also meet the requirement if the total clearly covers the renewal period.
Presentation Matters
Clarity matters in your application. Make sure your documentation is well-organized and clearly presented.
Residence Requirement – 183 Days
To renew the Non-Lucrative Visa successfully, you must have genuinely resided in Spain. The Ministry guidance confirms that applicants must have resided in Spain for more than 183 days per calendar year. Extended absences can affect your eligibility for renewal.
Health Insurance Requirements
You must continue to hold private health insurance that:
Is valid in Spain
Has no co-payments
Offers full coverage
Has remained active without gaps
Administrative and Tax Compliance
Under the updated regulation, authorities may also verify that:
You have no outstanding debts with Spanish tax or social security authorities
You continue to meet the original conditions of authorization
Application Process
Renewals are submitted within Spain:
Online using a digital certificate (recommended), or
In person via your local Extranjería
Once approved, you will attend a police appointment to apply for your new TIE card.
Common Reasons for Renewal Refusals
Most refusals are not due to a lack of funds. They often occur because of:
Incorrect IPREM calculations
Poorly structured financial evidence
Insurance policies that do not meet requirements
Failure to demonstrate actual residence
Inconsistent documentation
The regulation allows flexibility in how sufficient means are demonstrated. What matters is meeting the threshold clearly and presenting the evidence properly.
